Does anyone remember this series? The Ashleys by Melissa de la Cruz had four installments: The Ashleys, Jealous?, Birthday Vicious, and Lip Gloss Jungle. But after the last book, there has been no news of further releases, despite the major cliffhanger at the end of Lip Gloss Jungle. And it's been more than a year since it has been published.
The series was actually decent, although similar to many other teen novels. Lauren Page, an eternal loser, gets an extreme makeover over the summer and attempts to take down the girls who tormented her in the past. Her Target: The ultra-exclusive clique, The Ashleys. The Ashleys are led by the beautiful and sly Ashley Spencer. There are two other girls in the group. Ashley Alioto, called A.A. to avoid confusion, surpasses Ashley Spencer in beauty - her mom was a supermodel, after all. But besides that and experience with boys, A.A. is a tomboy all the way. Her best friend is even a boy, Tri. Ashley Li, Lilli, has it all. Looks, brains, and enough extra-curriculurs to secure her any spot in an ivy league college. But, she's still not happy with Ashley having the number one spot in the group.
Lauren's plan is to infiltrate the group, and make the Ashleys hate eachother, thus ending the reign of the fabulous girls. However, it's not as easy as it seems when she actually starts to like them.
These books are a fun mix of growing up, friendship, and the ordinary things a seventh grader has to deal with. However, these books, in my opinion, are like the West Coast version of The Clique with a slight twist. Anyone who enjoys the Lisi Harrison novels will surely enjoy The Ashleys.
That is, if Cruz continues to write the series.
